Vanishing social services in Metro East prompts vigil

More budget cuts in Illinois threaten to destroy human services throughout the state, according to some advocates for those in need.

Illinois Partners for Human Services, Metro East POD  hosed a candlelight vigil to bring attention to the plight of individuals affected by the cuts to human care programs in Illinois.

Advocates and service recipients spoke of how the cuts are affecting them.  A coffin, representative of the cuts, will present a stirring visual image for the gathering.

This rally was held on Tuesday, October 12, 2010, at 7:00 p.m. at 307 West Clay, St. John's Community Care/Collinsville FIA at the corner of West Clay and Goethe Avenue in Colinsville, IL

Services in the metro-east are vanishing for people at risk of becoming homeless, low-income moms who need daycare, low-income, teens, senior citizens and victims of domestic violence.  Human Services budget cuts appear to be cost effective but in the long run will cost millions of dollars more to tax payers.  Among the casualties are adult day care for those with Alzheimer’s, daycare supports for low-income working moms, and mental health services for the mentally ill and home care for individuals who are disabled.

Illinois Partners for Human Service is a statewide network of organizations that advocate for high quality, responsible and sustainable approaches to providing human service in Illinois.  We engage nonprofit, government, faith-based, business and education leaders who agree that our communities are healthier and safer when residents have access to bedrock public services such as early childhood learning, afterschool programs, family support, assistance to the disabled, workforce training, violence prevention, and homecare for the elderly.
